Alberta Homestead Indexes
Value of the records:
One of the most heavily used resources in genealogy are land records. Immigration agents under Clifford Sifton—the Minister of Interior in 1896-1905, lead an ambitious marketing campaign by flooding Europe with advertisement, such as: posters, notices, pamphlets promoting Western Canada’s “free land”. It was a strong incentive for many of our ancestors to immigrate. Homestead records are a valuable resource in family history. These gems can hold clues to family members, neighbors, and previous residences leading to citizenship, probate records, vital statistics and so many more sources.
The way it worked …
- An individual applied for a land claim
- After occupying the land for 3 years and making improvements, the homesteader could apply for a patent
- If successful: a patent or what is known today as a “certificate of title” was issued in the person’s name
