Unit 1—has been prepared specifically for children between the ages of 6 to 8. It begins by examining the child’s family, looking at the organization of the family unit, its members, and their relationships. It notes that families existed well back in the past, and introduces the child to the ideas of “ancestors” and “history” as they apply to the child. This activity-book requires the child to be involved in the study of family through hands-on exercises. It is designed to be used as a whole unit or may be used selectively, employing the pages best suited to the needs of your children. However, the best study of family is done with interested and involved adults to give support and deal with questions and concerns that may arise for the child. Read more ... ›

Unit 2—has been specifically designed for children between the ages 9 to 11. It begins by examining the child’s family home in Alberta. The resource surveys the locations of this home, the features that made this home a desirable destination for people including the child’s ancestors, and that a home changes through time. This unit studies that “place of origin” and examines how it is like and at the same time different from the family’s present home. It also introduces the child to the idea of “legacy” as family, places, and cultures do much to shape who families are and how we live. Read more... ›

Unit 3—is a unit designed for young people ages 12 to 14. It focuses on a key member in most Alberta families, the “immigrant ancestor” that is the first person or perhaps a group of people to leave their traditional homeland and travel to North America and eventually to Alberta. This ancestor acts as a bridge between a family’s present as it has unfolded in Alberta and their past as it was once lived at a place far across the ocean. This resource provides activities through which students may discover this important member of their family. Within this unit, the resources used to facilitate these activities, use examples from as early as the 1890s spanning various migrations of people from many continents to the present. By the conclusion of this unit, the young people who have worked through it should have a better understanding of the process of immigration, the problems that our ancestors faced in this process, and perhaps ultimately a little better understanding of their roots.
